The ID Platform and MEB Architecture
Volkswagen's ID. lineup — ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 — runs on the MEB (Modular Electric Drive) platform, which is entirely separate from the MQB Evo and MLB Evo platforms used by Golf 8 and Audi. This distinction matters for coding and activation: MEB has different control module architecture, different security protocols, and different software structure.
ID.4 Headlight Options
US-market ID.4 is sold in Standard and Pro variants. Headlight options:
| Trim | Headlight Type | Matrix Hardware? |
|---|---|---|
| ID.4 Standard | LED | No |
| ID.4 Pro / Pro S | LED+ | Partial (some builds) |
| ID.4 GTX (EU) | IQ.LIGHT Matrix LED | Yes |
| ID.7 Pro S (US) | IQ.LIGHT Matrix (2024+) | Yes |
The situation is more variable than with Audi — not all US ID.4 variants have Matrix hardware present. The ID.7, which is the premium sedan variant, has a higher rate of Matrix hardware inclusion.
MEB Platform Security: How It Differs from MQB Evo
MEB uses a variation of SFD architecture but with different implementation details. The coding tools that work on MQB Evo (VCDS, OBDeleven for non-SFD tasks) require updated firmware and channel definitions for MEB. ODIS handles MEB natively.
Key MEB differences:
- CAN bus topology is different — gateway module has higher security role
- OTA (Over-the-Air) updates can modify coding parameters remotely by VW — some adaptations may revert after updates
- The "We Connect" app integration creates a semi-permanent connection to VW's servers that affects how some coding changes are handled
What's Actually Activatable on MEB?
On confirmed Matrix-hardware MEB vehicles, the market code activation process via ODIS works similarly to MQB Evo. However, some features that are straightforward on MQB Evo require more care on MEB due to OTA update risks:
- IQ.LIGHT matrix activation: Possible via ODIS if hardware present — same process, same SFD requirement
- DRL customization: Some options via VCDS/OBDeleven (with MEB-compatible firmware)
- Ambient lighting: Limited coding options — much of the ID. ambient system is controlled via the app
- Infotainment customization: Largely handled through the ID. app and native menus, not traditional coding
Important: MEB vehicles receive regular OTA updates from VW. Some coding adaptations may revert after an OTA update in ways that don't happen on MQB or MLB platforms. Confirm with your activation service how they handle this.
ID.4 vs. ID.7 for Matrix Activation
If you're specifically buying a VW EV for the best headlight experience, the ID.7 Pro S with factory IQ.LIGHT is the cleaner path — it more consistently has the hardware present and the activation is straightforward. The ID.4 situation is more variable by build date and trim configuration.
German Orbit and MEB Vehicles
German Orbit's primary expertise is MLB Evo and MQB Evo Audi platforms. For MEB vehicles (ID.4, ID.7), we can assess compatibility on a case-by-case basis. Contact us with your VIN for a free hardware check before scheduling any session.
