Audi Welcome Light Show: How to Enable It After Matrix Activation

Back to Blog

The welcome and goodbye light sequences on Matrix-equipped Audis are one of those features that feels disproportionately satisfying for what it actually is — a choreographed lighting animation when you approach or leave the car. In Euro-spec configuration, these sequences are one of the more visually distinctive things about owning a Matrix-equipped Audi. In US NAR mode, they're either absent or reduced to a much simpler version.

This guide explains how the light sequences work, which models have the best animations, and how activation restores the full behavior.

What the Welcome Sequence Does

When you approach your locked Audi with the key (or unlock it remotely), the "Coming Home" or welcome sequence fires:

The "Leaving Home" sequence is the reverse: when you lock the car, the headlights sweep or pulse before going dark, acknowledging your departure.

Why the US Version Is Reduced

The NAR headlight configuration suppresses the full Matrix lighting behavior, which means the welcome sequence runs in a simplified mode — typically just illuminating the headlights at low intensity for a few seconds without the choreographed sweep or animation. The hardware can do the full sequence; the software doesn't trigger it.

After Matrix activation, the headlight system is in full Euro-spec mode, and the welcome/goodbye sequences use the complete animation set available for your model.

Model-by-Model Welcome Sequence Notes

A8 D5 / Digital Matrix models

The most elaborate welcome sequence in the lineup. The Digital Matrix system can produce a sweeping, flowing light animation that moves across the full headlight face. Some US owners have described it as looking like the car is "breathing" light. This is the flagship light show in Audi's portfolio.

Q8 / RS Q8

The Q8's welcome sequence includes a distinctive outward sweep of the Matrix elements. In the dark, approaching a Q8 with a full welcome sequence active is noticeably more dramatic than the standard white LED flash.

A7 C8 / RS7

The A7's fastback shape frames the headlights at a distinctive angle, and the welcome animation on this model has a particular elegance. The dynamic indicator strip performs a sweep as part of the welcome choreography in Euro spec.

A3 8Y / MQBevo models

More compact animation due to the smaller headlight units, but distinctly more active than the NAR mode. The MQBevo platform's dynamic indicators sweep outward as part of both the welcome and departure sequences.

How to Configure Welcome Light Duration

Post-activation, the welcome light duration can be adjusted via VCDS or OBDeleven — it's a standard adaptation in the HLCU. Common adjustments include extending or shortening the illumination time and enabling or disabling the sequence in specific conditions (e.g., only when dark outside, only when near home location via navigation).
