The Standard vs. Optional Question

Whether Matrix LED is standard or optional on your Audi depends on the specific model, model year, and trim level — and this affects both whether the hardware is present and how to find out.

The key principle: if Matrix is listed as standard equipment for your trim, the hardware is definitely there. If it's an option, it depends on what was ordered.

How to Verify on a Specific Car

New Car Order

When configuring a new Audi on the Audi USA configurator, look under Exterior > Lighting for "Matrix LED headlights" or similar. The option is listed with its price if optional, or simply shown as included if standard.

Existing Car (New or Used)

  1. Window sticker: Listed under options with a line item price (if optional and ordered) or in the standard features section (if standard)
  2. Production label PR codes: 8G4 = Matrix LED, 8G8 = HD Matrix LED, 8IT = standard LED
  3. Visual inspection: Matrix lens pattern is distinctive — small individual LED "pixels" visible through the lens
  4. Free VIN check: Contact German Orbit — we decode PR codes and confirm hardware presence at no charge

What "Standard but Not Activated" Means

Here's the key insight for US buyers: on models where Matrix is standard, the hardware is definitely present — but the adaptive function is disabled in NAR mode. "Standard" refers to the hardware tier, not the activation status. Every US-market Audi with Matrix hardware needs the ECE mode activation to actually use the adaptive beam function.

This is why even owners of models where Matrix is "standard" (A7, A8, Q8) still benefit from an activation session — they have the hardware, they just need the software switch thrown.
