The practical result: Digital Matrix can produce any shape of light output. It can draw symbols on the road (the A8 projects a pedestrian symbol when it detects pedestrians). It can project directional arrows for navigation. And its masking precision is far beyond what discrete LED arrays can achieve — the shadow zone around detected vehicles is precisely shaped rather than being a rough approximation based on segment count.
Laser light integration
The A8 D5 also offers laser headlights as an option on higher trims. The laser module is a separate light source that extends the beam range significantly beyond what LED can achieve — theoretically illuminating objects up to 500 meters ahead. The laser integrates with the Digital Matrix system and extends its range at highway speeds.

Precision masking at a different level
In Euro spec, the A8's Digital Matrix tracks detected vehicles and creates a precise shadow exactly shaped to their silhouette. A sedan two lanes over has a sedan-shaped dark zone; a truck has a truck-shaped zone. The illumination of everything else — road surface, signs, pedestrians, cyclists — remains at full intensity.
Road projections
The A8 D5 in Euro spec can project symbols onto the road surface — a pedestrian icon when a pedestrian is detected, a warning symbol when a hazard is identified. These projections are locked in NAR mode and activate post-coding.
Navigation projection
On some A8 builds, the Digital Matrix can project turn indicators on the road surface when the navigation system is active. This feature's availability depends on specific module software versions.
Extended laser range
If your A8 has the laser option, activation enables the full 500m beam extension at highway speeds. The laser module activates automatically above approximately 60 km/h on dark roads.
