A5 B9 Platform and Matrix Availability
The B9 A5 was introduced in the US for model year 2018. Matrix LED headlights were available as an option on Premium Plus and above from launch. The RS5 includes Matrix LED as standard equipment across all US trims.
The same B9/B9.5 split applies as with the A4: pre-2020 models are B9, 2020 onward are B9.5 with updated headlight units. Both generations are activatable with the same outcome.
Body Style Notes
All A5 body styles — Sportback, Coupé, and Cabriolet — use the same headlight hardware and the same coding process. The Cabriolet's convertible roof doesn't affect the headlight system. RS5 Sportback and Coupé are the same.
What Changes After Activation
The full Matrix functionality is identical to the A4 B9 activation:
- Permanent high-beam with automatic traffic masking
- Dynamic cornering light behavior
- Speed-adaptive beam patterns
- Enhanced coming home / leaving home light sequences
For the A5 specifically, the lower roofline and more slanted windshield angle mean the forward-facing camera sits at a slightly different position than in the A4 sedan — but this doesn't affect the activation outcome or the system's performance.
RS5 Activation
The RS5 uses the same B9 platform and has Matrix LED as standard equipment on all US trims. Activation is identical. RS5 owners often combine Matrix activation with other performance-oriented coding in the same session — track display modes, exhaust sound staging, and similar features are sometimes adjusted simultaneously.
