Audi A3 8Y Matrix LED Headlights: Activation & Hidden Features Guide

Back to Blog

The Audi A3 8Y — the fourth generation A3, launched in 2022 in the US — brought Audi's MQBevo platform to the compact class. Along with it came a new Matrix LED headlight option that's considerably more refined than what the previous A3 offered. US-market 8Y A3s with the Matrix option ship in the same software-restricted state as every other US Audi. Here's what that means and what activation changes.

The MQBevo Platform and What It Means for Activation

The MQBevo platform (used in the 8Y A3, Golf 8, and related VAG models) introduced several changes compared to the earlier MQB architecture used in the B9 A4 era. For headlight activation specifically:

The upshot is that MQBevo activation requires current ODIS tooling and updated coding parameters. Consumer tools like OBDeleven have limited ability to perform Matrix activation on this platform without the necessary access credentials.

Which A3 8Y Trims Have Matrix LED?

In the US, the A3 8Y Matrix LED headlights are available on:

Note on RS3: The RS3 8Y uses the same platform but has its own guide — see our RS3 8Y Matrix Activation article.

What Activation Changes on the A3 8Y

The A3 8Y's Matrix activation delivers the same core functionality shift as other Audi platforms, with a few 8Y-specific observations:

Adaptive high-beam

The system switches from conventional low/high operation to continuous high-beam with automatic masking. On the compact A3, the lower ride height means the forward-facing camera has a slightly different angle of view than on SUVs — the masking precision is excellent, particularly at the typical driving distances of a compact car.

Dynamic welcome sequence

The 8Y A3 has a more elaborate light animation in the Euro-spec configuration. The welcome and goodbye sequences are one of the most visually distinctive differences owners notice immediately after activation.

Scandinavian DRL integration

The 8Y A3 in Euro-spec uses a specific DRL pattern where position lights activate alongside the dipped beam. This can be enabled in the same activation session on most 8Y builds.

S3 8Y Activation

The S3 uses the same MQBevo platform and the same Matrix LED headlights. The activation process is identical. S3 owners typically have Matrix LED confirmed in their build data since it's standard equipment on all US S3 trims.

Activation Process for A3/S3 8Y

  1. VIN verification — confirms MQBevo platform and Matrix hardware presence
  2. ENET cable connection to OBD-II port
  3. Remote ODIS session — approximately 30–45 minutes on the 8Y platform due to the updated security framework
  4. Coding verification

Frequently Asked Questions

Can OBDeleven activate Matrix on my A3 8Y?
OBDeleven can perform many coding functions on the 8Y, but Matrix LED activation specifically requires ODIS-level access. The security access codes and coding parameters for Matrix on MQBevo are not available through consumer-level tools.

Does the A3 Sportback version activate the same way?
Yes. The Sportback body style shares the same platform and headlight hardware.

How does the 8Y A3 compare to the B9 A4 after activation?
The 8Y system is the newer architecture, so in theory more refined. In practice, both deliver excellent adaptive high-beam performance — the difference in real-world driving is marginal.
